Take a breath "Chow-chow". It's just a game. Don't panic, don't scream, and don't be afraid. His virtual eyelids opened, absorbing every pixel, every detail of Collapsed Reality. Tilting his head to look at the sky proved little purpose. The buildings towered over him, blotting the sun and casting a shadow upon his Sprite. "Alright. Everything seems in order. Time to see my what I start with." He opened his menu, finding all his information. Stats, Level, Exp, it was all there. He stared at the Lv1 icon above the Character picture. A Male avatar stared back at him, looking as weak as anyone who started the game. "Its going to be a loooong day" Closing the menu, Satosen took another look at the street. NPC's stood on the sidewalks, standing lifelessly or moving in a pattern to give the "life" essence in any game. Some players were online, easily recognized from their default or upgraded armor, and their hurried running gave them more life than any NPC did. He began walking, looking for the questgiving NPC who aided the newcomers, but something felt strange. Was it because it was a virtual reality, or was someone really watching him?

Syn chuckled in the shadows of the building. N00bs. Look at the way they walked, she bet none of them had anything worth stealing, other then their pitiful one bar stats. She watched as a new guy popped in and checked his menu. Bah, he doesn't even know the shortcuts. But he looked worth teasing, bullying around a bit. She grinned, which put more of an eerie look on her face, seeing how she was literally covered by a cloak, and was standing in the shadows.
She casually walked into the crowds, following the young man. So clueless. He did seem to feel her presence at least a little bit, which will eventually lead to his doom. Or his loss of stats. Doom did sound much better then stats. That just ruined her mood. Sighing slightly, he passed by him, nudging him slightly. Nope, no real-money-coins, no coins, just a point in each stat. Quickly taking all his points, she swerved away from him, still following to see how he reacts. Did the GM say that she shouldn't steal stats? She really couldn't remember, not that she really cared. That guy was an ass anyways.
She brought her attention back on her prey. Hehe, she thought, this is going to be fun.

"SOMETHING HAS BEEN STOLEN FROM YOU" Great. Hackers. No. Not hackers. Thieves. This was in the manual wasn't it? Didn't they Game Designers make sure that towns were safe? "Fuuuuuuu..." Satosen muttered. He looked at his inventory. No, no items stolen. Not that it really mattered anyway. Newplayers got their default weapon, which is both unsellable and unstealable. "Ok, no items, but what did he take? Wait..... did he really take my Stat points?!" This sucked. Such a terrible game mechanic. Forget it. He was only LV1. He should be able to level up asap. The only question was who was the thief? Think. NPC's weren't this punishing early game. He didn't talk to any NPC, or player for that matter. No wait. Something bumped into him. Someone. A player. Black hood, couple of inches shorter than him, obviously a better player. If this thief wanted a show, then he wasn't going to give one. "Keep walking. The troll isn't going to like that. Draw him out."

Syn giggled. "Ohhhhh he's trying to keep his cool. Hmmm what else should i take? His equipment? Nah that would be cruel. But he doesn't need that sword, he could punch pigs to death." she mumbled, pulling her cloak closer to her to keep people from getting caught in it. "Or I can lure him into a dungeon and see how he fairs." Oh that founded fun. She grinned, almost skipping now. She walked up to him again, this time with a piece of paper which had the words "Hello hehe, going to take your stuff again~" on it, and gently swapped it with his sword. People really shouldn't keep weapons openly equipped, even if it is set as default. She stepped back and watched again.
This time, however she made sure she stayed in sight, her beast cat hears wiggling beneath her hood to perhaps get his attention. She muttered the keyword "map" and "dungeon" to shortcut to a list of dungeons nearby. Selecting one with a high level boss, (might as well grind a bit after teasing this guy) she began to head in its general direction, slowing down just enough, hoping the guy would follow.

*Bump* There he was. Black hood, shorter body, same thief. "Wait, does he have.... Cat ears?" Weird. Probably an Otaku. He felt release of weight. He took something AGAIN. Satoru opened his inventory. He better not have taken his armor. "Oh, ok. Rusty Sword's gone too. So much for a tutorial." This is overwhelming. How toxic was this community? At least his second-to-worthless tunic was still in place. But wait, "A note?" He opened the item. *Jingle* "HELLO HEHE, GOING TO TAKE YOUR STUFF AGAIN~" Satoru looked up from his menu. The Otaku was walking slowly, ears twitching, obviously waiting for a second reaction. Not good. If he stayed online any longer, his entire account might as well be stolen. Sighing, he opened the menu, pressing the Log-off button. "Maybe some fresh air would be good." And maybe the thief would find someone more short-tempered to harass. His Sprite dissolved into pixels, and his real life eyes blinked, staring at the brown ceiling of his house. "ただいまー (I'm Home)"

Syn sighed. "I guess I went overboard. " She mumbled, and pulled off a ring. It glistened for a moment, then her stats dropped a few hundred levels. "Myup should have left this behind. Too tempting. " A message popped up in a window, flashing furiously at her. "GODDAMIT SYN HOW MANY TIME DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU NOT TO USE YOUR BETA RING!! I AM LOCKING THAT, OKAY? OH WAIT YOU DONT GET A SAY IN THIS. GO SEND THAT POOR GUY SOME STUFF SERIOUSLY. ILL SEND YOU HIS USERNAME AND THINGS. OH whoops capslock. anyways go return his things, maybe add in a spear or something. but seriously, that was overboard. REALLY. OKAY"
Syn sighed, and dropped the ring, as well as the stolen items into a small vortex attached to the notice. So much for a new start. She was practically "cheating" from the start. The vortex spat back out her ring, this time with a chain on it. Welp. That'll keep her in check for a while. She reopened her map, and finding the nearest mailbox, created a package with 100 coins, ticket for the sword and stats, and a note saying "Yeah sorry about that, went overboard. Won't happen again! -syn" and chucked it in. She sighed, still feeling quite guilty. Time to start getting to those dungeons.

'Finally.' thinks Pasiphae, seeing the Forest of Buildings loom up all around her without any issues. She was somehow cursed of always having technical issues when starting a new game. This one was even worse than the last few. Any other day she would have given up, but this was one game for which she had really been looking forward to. The town was very populated. She watched as a player beside her logged out, his sprite elegantly dissolving into pixels. She felt very Australian holding that wooden boomerang. Wondering what other boomerangs she had, she opened her weapons inventory. her eyes sparkled as she took in the throwsticks, returning, and non-returning boomerangs. they usually didn't use prehistoric weapons in MMO's, and just the fact that this one did automatically made it her favourite. A sigh very near her interrupted her thoughts. It came from a cloaked figure with adorable kitty ears standing so close to her she wondered if this was one of those games where characters would walk into each other. The figure caught her staring.

Syn perked up at the sight of a centaur staring at her. She seemed new, maybe some one to steal from. No, she told herself shaking her head slightly. It was bad enough she stole someone's beginner goods. And probably scared them away. "yes?" she asked the centaur cautiously. Maybe they needed help, and she can actually do something helpful for once.
Syn in her mind, however was on a completely different topic. She was still drowning in guilt. She had sent the n00b guy half of her coins that she had on her, and the stuff she stole, but she just. felt. bad. She needed to write a note. A sorry note. Those usually worked, but they were offline. She couldn't just leave them a message could she? That would be weird, and they would see her full username as the sender. She began to blank out into a panicking frenzy in her head. Perhaps a theif class wasn't the best for her.

Pasi blinked, feeling bad for having stared. She meant to say something nice like "I like your ears", but instead came out "what are you?" race class and gender, she thought, while selecting an array of throwsticks to throw in her side pouch, wondering where she could get a tutorial and being impatient to go into her first battle. She made a little skippetty-trot to try and get used to a centaur form. She was barely used to playing VSE's let alone different races. 'Cool!' she thought, 'I didn't think I'd ever get to feel what it's like to have four legs. or hooves, rather."

October 17th. That was the date on the Mind-Link headset. "Some birthday this is." Satoru got up from the cushion he was lying down on. Taking off his headset, he walked into the kitchen to make some tea. Pouring himself some Barely tea, he once again read the note that was left on the table. "Satou-chan, sorry I can't make it home tonight! The office is chaining me down because some employees took the day off for the game that I'm giving you! As much as I don't want you staying in the house all day, go nuts and have fun! This is your day! ILY <3<3<3 - Mom" "This is my day... huh" Satoru shoved the note into his pocket.
Staring at the headset, it's no wonder that Mom's co-workers took the day off. This was the brand new VRMMO that hit the market. Even the cafe Satoru worked part-time at insisted that he had his birthday off to dive into this fantasy. He opened the manual that came with the game again. Scanning through the flashy text, the images of pixelated monsters exploding, there was nothing about stealing stats or default weapons. "Is this a bug?" He looked at the game cover. "YOU START UP COLLAPSED REALITY" This reality was started up by people who wanted to escape the hardships of the real world. But did that mean that this virtual reality bring the cold experiences from the real world too? "What is there I can do?" Wait. On the promotional videos, weren't there players who could attack other players in "safe havens"? "Berserkers. Thats what they were called." It seemed like the perfect class for Toxic players to harass newcomers. "If this world is going to be cruel as reality, then its no longer a healthy escape from our daily lives" he said aloud. Satoru put on the helmet, booting up the game. *Ping ping, Whooooosh* The sound effects played, the star-filled sky rendered, and his pixelated body reconstructed itself. If people were going to harass the weak, then he was going to do something.
He was going to punish the harassers

"Huh? Oh OH uh.... I'm a beast type, like you, except a cat." Syn replied, snapping out of her daze. She twitched her ears to emphasize. "Female, if case you were wondering." seeing how she was pretty much covered up all the time, and she was constantly wearing unisex clothes, alot of people had mistaken her for a male at first sight. If the cloak came off, however, it was slightly more obvious she was a female.
Syn froze for a moment as she saw the guy she had basically harassed earlier come online. Right on the same place the centaur was standing. The two sprites glitched for a while, but ended with the newcomer on top of the centaur. "Glitch noted." Syn mumbled, pulling out a report screen while taking a snapshot of the occurrence. As she typed she prayed that the guy receives the sent items before he gets mad at her.

Why did he feel taller? Satosen looked down. He was standing on a horse. No not a horse. A centaur. Half-man, half horse. "Nevermind. This game is more detached from reality than I expected." Satosen thought. The female Centaur stared at him frighteningly, as if he was going to sit down on her back and yell "High-ho silver, Away!" Embarrased as he jumped off the centaur, he looked back and said a hurried "sorry" and began running down the street. After running a couple blocks, he stopped. "How DO I become a Berserker anyway?" Dammit. He wasn't this scatterbrained. "Ok Satoru, think. If you wanted to be a special class, who do you ask? Where do you go?" He opened up the menu. If the map should tell him where the most populated areas were, he would be able to listen in on other players, and possibly catch someone else wanting to be a Berserker. "SYNETHIS HAS SENT YOU A PACKAGE" The text popped up the moment he opened his menu. Inside the package was 100 coins, a in-game ticket for a new sword and stats, and a note. "Yeah sorry about that, went overboard. Won't happen again! -syn" What was with this player? Did he just toy with players, then return their items like nothing happened? Even the initial "syn" looked a little too much like "Sin". "No. Forget about him. Find the populated areas." There. The plaza. Green masses of players were there. It was a great meet-up spot. He set a waypoint, used the two tickets for stats and sword, and closed the menu. "Time to get running"

Somebody spawned IN me. It's a sensation I'd rather not describe. The brief glimpse I got of him before he zipped off revealed that he was the one I watched logging out earlier. Wonder if that was due to tech issues since he came back so soon. The cat beast female cloaked figure seemed to try and talk to the guy who spawned, but the latter had apparently not noticed her. "You know him?" I asked, unsure what to say, really. The difference between VSE's and regular MMO's was that conversations were more like real life- face to face and with actual speech, rather than text that you could erase, where I'm more nervous to talk to others.

"Cant say know, but I may or may not have bullied him a bit. WHICH I DO REGERET i will say, but yknow. went overboard. " She shrugged, unsure what else to say. "Probably hates me now but.." she trailed off not wanting to continue. She fidgeted slightly, and then pulled her hood down. Her ears twitched slightly. "I'm off to a dungeon then."

"W- wait!" cried Pasiphae after her. She'd been hoping to make a buddy to dungeon with. She probably would not have this good a chance anytime soon, and even though she still needed to get the basics down, she wanted to make sure she wouldn't have to solo her first dungeon.
